It’s no secret that store bought breadcrumbs have some funny ingredients in them that most people do not want to consume. It’s always a perplexing thing reading the back of a breadcrumb container. Salt, pepper and seasonings are one thing but once you start getting into ingredients that are hard for the average person to pronounce, what’s the point?
We want breadcrumbs, not a science experiment.
At any rate, once you see how easy it is to make your own Ezekiel breadcrumbs you will never think about those prepackaged “breadcrumbs” again.
On a positive note, homemade Ezekiel breadcrumbs are clean, they are super healthy and so versatile! They can be used in a wide range of recipes from classic savory dishes, like tuna noodle casserole and meatballs to sweet desserts like coconut cream bread pudding. The possibilities are endless.
Ingredients
The only ingredient that is needed in Ezekiel breadcrumbs is a single loaf of Ezekiel sprouted whole grain bread, it’s the one in the orange package.
- 1 loaf of Ezekiel Bread
Supplies
- Baking Sheet
- Food processor
- Funnel
- Storage jar
How to Make Ezekiel Breadcrumbs
Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
In the meantime, spread Ezekiel bread slices along the baking sheet.
The idea is to bake the bread so that all water content evaporates. This results in nice, dry Ezekiel breadcrumbs that will self-preserve.
Toast bread in oven for 15 minutes, then carefully take out baking sheet from oven and flip bread slices over.
After that, place baking sheet back into oven for an additional 15 minutes.
Once the bread has been fully toasted, break each slice into pieces. (Use your hands.)
Follow illustration below.
Lastly, throw the dehydrated pieces of bread into the food processor. Process the Ezekiel breadcrumbs until the fragments of bread have become a fine consistency.
Storage
Use a funnel to pour Ezekiel breadcrumbs into an airtight container and store in a cool dry location.
This recipe makes four cups of Ezekiel breadcrumbs, which fits perfectly into a 32 oz. mason jar.
These breadcrumbs stay fresh because all the hydration has been taken out of the bread. This means that they will last a long time in storage. Although, once you try them in your recipes it’s not likely they will be sitting around unused for very long. Enjoy!
How to Use Ezekiel Breadcrumbs
Try Ezekiel breadcrumbs as a topping or as a coating! It’s great on mac and cheese, green bean casserole, bread puddings, chicken nuggets, potato pancakes, zucchini fritters and onion fritters! There is no limit to these all-encompassing breadcrumbs!
Since Ezekiel breadcrumbs are plain and do not contain any seasonings, they worked very well with both savory and sweet dishes. So, be creative and enjoy!

Ingredients
- 1 loaf Ezekiel sprouted whole grain bread
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
- Line slices of Ezekiel bread across baking sheet.
- Bake bread slices for 15 minutes.
- Remove pan from oven. Flip slices of bread around to toast the opposite side. Place baking sheet back into oven for an additional 15 minutes to dehydrate bread.
- After 15 minutes, remove pan from oven again. Check pieces for dryness. Bread should be completely toasted and dried. If by some chance moisture remains, rearrange slices and pop into oven for an additional 5-10 minutes. Watch to prevent burning.
- Once the bread is thoroughly dry, use your hands to break slices into pieces before placing them into electric mixer to be pulverized.
- Using an electric mixer, start pulverizing with the "pulse" or low setting. Gradually increase speed to high so that the bread will be crushed into a fine "sand" consistency. This will take about 5 minutes.
- Once the pieces are completely crushed, pour breadcrumbs into storage container with airtight lid. Enjoy!
